Private Chess Tutoring

Mid-South Chess offers individual private chess lessons beyond its After-School Chess Programs. We suggest a consultation with Arlene, the Director of Mid-South Chess. She will discuss the level and personality of your child and will find you the best private coach for your child.  Feel free to contact her on her cell phone 901.494.2526 or by email at midsouthchess@hotmail.com

Intensive Chess Training Workshops

As a way to provide room for more specialized advancement, Mid-South Chess offers group classes at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, depending on demand. These four- to eight-week sessions are comprised of small groups of students, designed by the instructor to work on a specific theme or focus. Whereas a Scholastic class covers more broad strokes of educational skills, these Group lessons emphasize depth of study. Having other students involved in this setting allows the opportunity for one’s analytical process to be explored, debated, and improved.

Practice Outside of School Clubs

Friday Knights Chess Club

Shelby County Chess runs the Friday Knights Chess Club.  Admission is free and tournament play is $5.00.  It is a weekly get-together of all ages and levels of players from the greater Memphis metro area who come together in a safe and friendly environment to share the enjoyment of chess.  By being 0pen to all,  players get to experience a broader range of individuals than in their school environments. Learning how to interact socially and appropriately helps to develop each player as an individual.  Having a common activity, the chess game itself, many of the usual barriers to social hesitancy are lowered.  Players can participate in game practice and analysis, regardless of age or level of play.   Location:  Panera Bread Co, 4530 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN

Shelby County Chess Tournaments

We recommend Shelby County Chess Tournaments as they have always proven to be courteous, safe, wholesome, fair, and always fun.  Mid-South Chess students will receive advance notice of all tournaments.
